Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system caused widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
